Although they've long surpassed the required number of signatures to hold a referendum on the visit fee, hospital day fee and tuition, Fidesz has now collected over a million signatures, referendum chief István Tarlós announced, wrote daily Magyar Nemzet. Although Fidesz already submitted more than enough signatures to the National Elections Committee, they've continued to collect signatures, most likely because sticking your tongue out and pointing is considered a bit childish even in Hungarian politics.
The real reason to continue collecting signatures is to build up a database over Fidesz-supporters. It is illegal, but very handy before the election.
Well, if this is really the case, I'd say good for Fidesz, because extending data protection laws to prevent parties from keeping names and contact info on people who sign petitions is nuts. Actually, it's worth having a referendum just to overturn it...
