Last Friday, Hungarian and Slovak foreign ministers Kinga Göncz and Jan Kubis met in Sturovo, Slovaki to discuss ways to continue a dialogue between the two nations, writes BBJ.hu. Relations between the two countries have been strained since the summer of 2006, and have recently taken another turn for the worse following the Slovak parliament’s decision to reaffirm the Benes decrees. According to the ministers, programs of mutual benefit should be continued such as this weekend’s agreement to construct two new bridges across the Ipoly (Ipel) River. Kubis suggested that relations between the two countries are not as difficult as politicians frequently say they are, although Göncz highlighted the frequency of anti-Hungarian statements coming from Slovakia.
