Army conscription papers have been sent to several ethnic Hungarian residents in Voivodina.
The draft date specified in the letters sent to residents of Zombor and its environs is December 3, just one week before the deadline for a decision on Kosovo’s independence. Some of the recipients have already served in the army, but are still below the age of conscription.
The Serb Defence Ministry said the matter was merely routine, and related to the reorganisation of the armed forces. However a number of ethnic Hungarians appealed to local politician István Pásztor with their concerns, who said the procedure “is at best an outstanding example of panic mongering.”
Fidesz House foreign affairs committee chairman Zsolt Németh called on the Foreign Ministry to make enquiries about the call-up.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lajos Szelestey reiterated the official position of the Serb Defence Ministry, and added that the ministry is gathering information about the issue.
