Portal calls off Gyurcsány sympathy demonstration due to “over-interest”

Organizers posting through leftist online community Kapcsolat.hu have postponed a sympathy demonstration for beleaguered Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány on Budapest’s Kossuth tér scheduled for this Saturday, writes news portal Hírszerző.hu. Around 300 people were originally expected to participate, but since the press picked up on the story interest increased and the organizers said they were no longer able to guarantee the safety of demonstrators. Neither Gyurcsány nor other Socialist politicians welcomed the idea for the demonstration, because they feared that provocateurs would verbally or physically insult participants. “This demonstration was being organized separately from the Socialist Party, and I was really hoping it would be canceled,” a leading politician of the party told the portal.
