Fidesz calls on gov’t to stop referendum drive

Fidesz deputy spokesman András Cser-Palkovics on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány to halt the government’s referendum campaign from public funds after the release of the second edition of the publication Új Magyarország (New Hungary). The deputy spokesman said “the government drive is immoral and challenges the constitution.” Cser-Palkovics added that the government’s leaflet campaign has cost over Ft 150 million.

The government spokesman’s office responded that the referendum will not affect the gist of the reforms and therefore will not influence the government’s information campaign related to them.
