The parliament building will once again be cordoned off from the public as MPs will again vote on the health care reform bill this Monday, observes conservative daily Magyar Nemzet. The bill is up for a vote again after President László Sólyom declined to sign the bill and returned it to parliament for further deliberations.
Kossuth Square, the area in front of the parliament building is expected to be closed off from the public beginning on Monday in anticipation of protesters, since a majority of Hungarians oppose the government’s health care reform plans.
József Dobozi, a brigadier general with the national police and in charge of security stated that Kossuth Square would be closed off from midnight on February 11 until necessary, with the fences staying place at the latest until March 31. This would overlap with the Fidesz sponsored referendum to be held March 9. Dobozi referred to last September 17, the anniversary of the lies speech, when an assembled crowd insulted parliamentarians as they left to go home as justification for the fence.
