Fraud suspect Zuschlag makes detailed confession

János Zuschlag, the politician at the center of a high-profile fraud case, has broken his silence and made a detailed and revealing confession, implicating himself and other MSZP members, daily Magyar Hírlap has learned.

Zuschlag’s hearing will continue throughout the week. Of the 14 suspects named so far, Ferenc Katus, former member of the MSZP faction in Bács-Kiskun county, will be held in custody until April 4, while István Lados, Zuschlag’s former secretary, is under house arrest.

Zuschlag was arrested in September 2007. He and his accomplices are suspected of embezzling Ft 75 million (€300,000) in funds from tenders for non-existent companies. One of the most generous donors was the sports ministry, then led by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány.

According to Magyar Nemzet, Bács-Kiskun county deputy attorney general Ferenc Szabó did not deny nor confirm the reports, but said the investigation would be completed by March 19.
