Speaker bans media from Hungarian Parliament on referendum day

Speaker Katalin Szili yesterday barred journalists from entering the House on Sunday. Meanwhile, Democratic Forum chairwoman Ibolya Dávid said Forum MPs will be attending on Sunday to protest the referendum being used for political ends and “two individuals’ struggle for power.”

The Forum said it is an unprecedented and shameful mockery of the freedom of press, democracy and freedom of speech that journalists will not be allowed to enter Parliament on March 9. Szili said there is no obstacle to the Forum caucus holding a meeting in the MPs headquarters on Sunday but press passes will be invalid.
