Referendum deadlock in Baranya County

szarasz-splits.jpgWhile Sunday’s referendum passed nationally by a wide margin, the scene was different in the Baranya County settlement of Szárász, which now has the distinction of being the only voting group in Hungary split exactly evenly on the question of whether the unpopular doctor “visit fee” should be abolished. According to nol.hu exactly half of those who turned out at the polls voted “yes,” while the other half voted “no.” Meanwhile, it would probably not be wise to draw many conclusions from the deadlock in Szárász, given that the turnout for the vote appears to have been well below the national average of just over 50% – more precisely, 16 of the hamlet’s estimated population of 64, with eight “yeas” and eight “nays.”
