Socialist Party section Harmadik Hullám (Third Wave) yesterday decided not to support the policy of private capital in health insurance, and warned the Free Democrats that they can leave the coalition if they do not agree with the proposal.
Section chief and deputy Socialist caucus leader Attila Mesterházy explained that the section had asked Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány to initiate the re-negotiation of the coalition treaty with the Free Democrats once the latter’s party election has taken place.
No consultations had been held with other party leaders on their decisions, he underlined, adding that “there is a chance of the party continuing to govern with a parliamentary minority, and in that scenario it could implement a social democratic agenda.”
Mesterházy observed that the section supports the coalition and has faith in its prospects, but stressed that a lack of compromise or responsibility from either party could cast a pall over its future.
He claimed that the Socialists have had enough of a party with 1% support directing the coalition on health insurance and tax reform. The Socialist Party should swerve off towards a third way and swing to the left, he concluded.
