National Election Office to verify referendum signatures

The National Election Commission (OVB) on Monday ordered the National Election Office (OVI) to start verifying the signatures submitted in favour of a referendum against the privatisation of health insurance. Under a unanimous decision by the OVB, the OVI will have to verify almost half a million signatures collected by May 23.

The referendum is expected to be held sometime in the autumn.

Meanwhile, MPs did not order a referendum on five questions submitted by the Socialists and one by Fidesz and the Christian Democrats. All of the questions deal with cleaning up public life, party funding, MPs obligation to account for their expenses, the irreconcilability of MPs and mayors posts, and the wealth accumulated by state leaders and civil servants. However, Parliament has already voted on these matters.
