Apparently feeling that their giant crosses were not doing enough to fend off mythical birds, Jan Slota‘s Slovak National Party featured a map of Europe on its website in which Hungary was conspicuously missing, as seen to the right, index.hu reported. There’s only a few problems with this deft, or rather, daft diplomacy…
First there is the physical impossibility of this rather fantastic feat. The population of Hungary is nearly double that of Slovakia, and once you figure in that around 10% of Slovakia’s population is ethnically Hungarian, (this number fluctuates if you ask a Hungarian nationalist or their Slovak counterpart), then you arrive at a 2:1 ratio. So that would to some extent explain why only half of Hungary was conquered.
Except the last time Slovakia invaded Hungary as part of Czechoslovakia after the First World War, my grandfather successfully defended his land with a pitchfork. Despite having only glimpses of decent governing since, I’m sure Hungarian defensive strategy has nonetheless improved, thus making a successful Slovak offensive even less likely.
But if you look at the map, you’ll see that the half of Hungary claimed by Slovakia is the eastern, far less prosperous half, as opposed to the much better developed Transdanubia, meaning that Slota’s Slovak Nationalists couldn’t get even that right.

Do not worry about Slota and his party
I am a representative of the rest 90% population of Slovaks living in Slovakia, and must say that Slota and his Slovak National Party does not reflect standpoints of the majority of Slovaks. We peacefully live together with Hungarians in the south of Slovakia, and only those who have probably never met with any Hungarian in their lives are afraid of them or angry on them.
Any form or manifestation of extreme nationalism of xenphobia, either in Slovakia, Hungary or any other country, is sick, and should be repudiated.
well said, Pavol. I wish we could live in peace as two friendly neighbors. This animosity has been going on for much too long.
Haha Slota is such an idiot. If this ever did happen, Hungarians would easily be the majority in a larger “Slovakia”. So if anything the whole region would become a greater Hungary. Be careful what you wish for Slota!
Who is this Slota? A humorist?
Dobry člověk jste, Pavol, děkuji.
I spent last summer in the Czech Republic and was frequently mistaken for a Slovak on account of my accent.
We Hungarians have such a long and beautiful history of friendship with your Slavic cousins the Poles, I wonder why we can’t get along just as well with you guys???
@Mariska
Because the Poles actually have a history. As a people. While the “Slovaks” have none.Unless you believe that whole Moravia fairly tale.
Kind of like that Romanian-Dacian-Vlach nonsense.
Well the Slovaks certainly have a recent history, which by the way includes quickly becoming richer and more internationally influential and respected than Hungary.
@NJMagyar
Nicely put, too many people are living a fairytale version of history, once people begin to awaken there will be a revolution of consciousness, even the recent fairytale of 9/11 described as a Arab plot, whoever cant see this was a demolition caused by explosives planted throughout the buildings then they are also in denial, elite better look out because there wont be anywhere to hide once we expose your Lies! Hopefully this wont be a violent transition, we can only pray!
HP: I have to laugh at your line about praying there won’t be a “violent transition”, because a) obv you *are* praying for one, and b) all of Hungary’s playpen brownshirt together could be easily taken down by one Jewish grandmother from Újlipótváros. Pussies.
@Erik
I guarantee you wont be laughing, I actually feel sorry how stupid you sound, but when you do awake from your Kabalistic trance then you will see that we are not your enemies but your savior, and I understand that there is a certain percentage of ignorant people that will never awaken, and these people or lost souls have free will to chose and that’s what there God given rights are, so it’s the chooses we make that will help raise the mass consciousness of the ones who are willing to see the light and not stay in the dark serpent influence, so stay there but I wont be giving you any of my light, you will eventually self destruct!!
That’s strange: I was just talking with God, and she said the dark serpent influence is the only thing that gets her up in the morning…
Hi kids, God here.
I know y’all been wondering, so this is how it happened: I created the Universe all right, it was a science project way back in God School. It started out ok, but somehow got infested with life. Then humans came along and I just gave up. Sorry.
I’m really into bingo these days, not very lucky though…
PS: I’ve never met Erik. He just made it up. I’m not a chick, I’m an old dude with a white beard.
OMG then the dark serpent influence is *real*!
Hot Paprika: follow the white rabbit. Oh, and if you didn’t get it, this is a reference to the “Matrix” series of cheesy-plotted movies. A reference intended to point out the futile absurdity of your world-view in a brief attempt to amuse myself.
Haha.
Trinity, seems like your are to busy watching the box to face reality!
@Hot Paprika – I didn’t realise you and Oneness play with the same dick. Hello, Hot Poof!
I love it people, this is some great stuff and it’s very revealing; a validation of what I have been caling for here all along!! There’s those who aren’t from around here and don’t understand the dynamics.
No Slovak like vdx or anyone else, has the standing to object when I called for civilised revision of Trianon, based upon international law and legally sanctioned plebescite of our boundaries. I don’t think the old “64 county Hungary” is a viable and restorable dream, but then neither is this resentment driven hashish dream map above! The Slovaks have no standing to “award” areas of our country as far as south as Pecs to the Austrians. For that, they better get some serious military might and power that can stand up to NATO and the US. (Don’t hold your breath)
I want the “Vienna Awards” of 1938 (And real Hungarians know what I mean) where Hungarian majority majority areas of Slovakia can decide whether they want to be ruled by us, or people that want to give away all of what is left of our nation. The responsibility for is with that nationalist Hungarian hating govt. in “Pozsony”; after looking at this map, I know they are not in good hands.
What’s weird about this map is the deja vu. In 1919, our “neighbors”, including the Austrians, all wanted to wipe us off the map and converge their borders at Budapest! The only difference is that the area claimed by the Slovaks on this map, were claimed by Romania! Maybe they could go fuck eacjh other!
After this great wonderful map, I don’t want any Slovak here showing any more insolence towards us. “VDX” or whatever his name really is, had better shut up and diappear. (Along with all of his countrymen) I haven’t heard such arrogance and contempt from Romanians, Serbe and Croats.
Hey “vdx”, I will publicly publish my email address here, through this website, if you will! While your at it, put up your real name; mine is, and always will be “Farkas László”. Let’s send this to the “webadministrator”. Don’t give me any long pussy response that no Hungarian wants to read. Let’s talk about real names and email addresses. Put it on the line!
America went to war over the “Zimmerman telegram” (look at December 17, 2008 4:18 PM on thread, at http://www.politics.hu/20081212/slovak-fm-says-bratislava-was-surprised-by-gyurcsanys-proposals
If we were as powerful and rich as them, the above Slovak map would be a cause for military action!
The above map also gives the Hungarians the best rebuttal to those ignorant people who stupidly suggest to us that we should “get over Trianon”. There is no “getting over” anything around here! In our world, nobody forgets! Those who think we should forget, had better be ready to ensure our power, prosperity and safety against competing natianalist resentments.
This is one of the best threads that ever appeared on this questioanably managed website. What gives it value is that inflammatory map at the top! It gave the best fuel ever for our nationalists! I like the Austrians, and I’m starting to like the Romanians, it’s just that I don’t think our country should be entierly run by them! I have a great proposal: I think Slovakia should revert back to Austrian control, after all, they were under Hapsburg rule for centuries weren’t they? The Habsburg dynasty still has living representatives doesn’t it? I say we ask them to come out of “retirement” and give them a “job”!
Ummmm guys? The Slovaks actually DO exist as a people. I should know, my family is about 1/4 Slovak. That map was made by Jan Slota and his small group of sexually frustrated retarded nationalists, not the entire population of Slovakia. Chill out.
Mariska thank you,
There is no “chilling out” around here, because whoever drew it up, it symbolises our unresolved anger, insecurities and resentments. Don’t give me the percentage of your ancestry, it’s irrelevant and won’t assuage the resentment. Go publish your own “map” and send it to Slota, and don’t forget to scan it to this website! I would really like to see your map!
The stupid map above tells me that the Hungarians in Slovakia are not in good hands, and this issue needs to be addressed at the international level, through plebescite. I think that is a far more civilised proposal than what Slota is calling for.
Mariska, how well travelled are you? Have you been to Malibu or the Bahamas or some equally fortunate place? I have! That is serious “La-La-land”, where people can forget history and party in an affluent, wonderful present tense. The denizens of the Carpathian basin, whatever their nationality, don’t have this fantastic luxury.
“The denizens of the Carpathian basin, whatever their nationality, don’t have this fantastic luxury.”
Actually, they could have that luxury but they chose to take the bitter pill of nationalism. And there is no shortage of demagogues to whip up some fervent nationalism every once in a while.
Joe I have to clarify something.
I actually pity all the nationalities around here, and I feel for all of them. Whether they are Slovaks, Hungarians, Serbs or Romanians, they are in a similiar position: they have had history thrust upon them; they did not get to rule their history. Until you can truly understand that, better that you know and think before you write.
Welcome to the world of small, powerless peoples! We are like a bunch of women who have all been gang raped! There is no hapiness for the likes of us, and likely, no justice! Nobody tells us to “get over things”, and to “Don’t worry, be happy!”
People from a part of the world that is more accomplished and successful can forget everything. Those Hungarians that want to forget history, should move to California!
Farkas Laszlo,
don’t waste your breath next time. I’m not an activist with obsessive surplus of leisure time and I’m not interested in becoming the target of your sick fellowmen. Assuming from your posts, you should thank me for providing you with at least elementary feedback you desperately need. I’m not the one dreaming in the world of antique, colorful maps and proclaiming myself “the greatest historian you ever known”, recently realising however that my linguistic heritage does not lead to Hotpaprika’s Avar’s empire (among all the perls I read here from you, this one was the most shining, so I hope I remembered it correctly). If you are looking for further dispute, I refer you to the authors of the map which rode you that crazy. You’ll find more common ground with them than you think. Or you could just join your adolescents on youtube under videos with felvidék. Surely, you would find your place among them and perhaps even realize soon how fine they’re doing even witout your irreplaceable help.
Have a joyful night.
Vdx,
Show me you map.
Give us you email address and real name
I don’t play “map games”, suit yourself. And I’m not an activist like you.
I am ready to change the map of Europe without violence. If I do not succeed, well them it’s a ball game lost, just like a football match. No reason for hatred is there? It’s just a ball game!
I welcome a Slovak “play” against us, every bit as much as I want a “play against them! If they can take Debrecen, legally, with international support, then maybe they are a whole lot smarter than I gave the cretit for! People that smart need to start running Hungary! I know “Gyurcsi” isn’t that intelligent!
Best wishes dude! May the best “loser” win!
For every game there has to be two at least. This game you’re playing you with yourself.
Enjoy it.
The “game” will go on, because the resentments that fuel it will outlast you and me. I fear that our grandkids will be involved, whatever you and I say.
All we can do is appeal to reason and international mediation. We are both small, small peoles that can not solve our diferrences any other way. It’s all “futball”, hopefully without soccer fan violence like you see in Brazil!
I am not so averse to the part of the above map that give half of our country to the Austrians! I might roll out the red carpet for them! With rule, goes responsiblity. I do think that they can provide a higher standard of governance and prosperity than we are prepared to give ourselves! Over the centuries, they have had more countol over their destiny than us. They do not have our hopeless, helpless slave mentality. They ran us for 500 years, and do you know why? Because we weren’t fit to run ourselves!
Give me the Austrian standard of governance and prosperity over ours, and I will take it!
@Laszlo Farkas I’m by your side mate! Unfortunately, most of the people don’t see life like that. They see it rather as a
struggle, as a survival game, as having to sacrifice our ideals for the sake of material security. We have been programmed to believe that since early childhood. We’ve been told “You cannot have it all, who do you think you are…”. Life is full of limitations.
You have to give up something you love in order to have something you need. Or so we believe.
Well, We Hungarians don’t think so. We are never to give up our true love for anything in this world. In fact, we are to bring our love and our blessings to the world, and show that there is an another way to live the way of Truth, instead of the way of fear that so many are following.
How do we live the way of Truth? It is exposing the lies by focusing on the truth more than anything in this world. But focusing on the true version to the best of our knowledge, of course, not false doctrines and historical scriptures that so many people are blindly worshiping. The truth that is also in your heart, if you care to listen. It’s based on trust, on surrender.
Adjon az Isten Szebb Jövőt!
Hot Paprika! Kedvesem!
I revere you and you feelings! Don’t ever take me literally when I say that I would roll out the red carpet to the Austrians taking over! When I say such a thing, I am being hyperbolic and provocative for the benefit of Hungarians! It’s meant to be a stimulation and challenge to our people, who I think could use a whole lot of that! I think smart Hungarian patriots should think about how how we can meaningfully raise our standard of living. On this account, the Austrians have a big leg up on us, and we need to get up to speed. The one thing I am dead serious about is the “slave mentality”; there is a big difference between giving orders for 500 years, and receiving them! It has damaged our psyche and self-esteem.
Map Math:
Greater Hungary = Greater Slovakia = Greater Serbia = Greater Romania = Greater Albania = Delusion = Mutual Destruction = Bombed back to the Stone Age by US = Kill them all and let God sort them out = Great Gypsy Empire = Szebb Jovo
@Farkas László
Absolutely! What we need and are trying to spread in Hungary is a version which is being spread quite rapidly amongst centre right and right wing supporters and even some lefties have been interested in the Hungarians secret oppressed History, and as mentioned before there are loads of bookstores, websites, music and networking amongst the people which is getting momentum it’s using our wit to be wise as serpents and gentle as doves to achieve our goals, and I believe we still have opportunities, it’s a hard campaign but well worth it, we can only gain from now on.
Farkas László,
if I wouldn’t know you’re doing it on purpose, I would have said your words are contradictory. There was time for international mediation and there was time for events to crystalize. That time is gone. Any further calls for external mediation would only lead to another discrepancies. As you said you do give the Austrians too much credit. A funny man would say the biggest achievement of Austria of the last decades was to persuade the world that Hitler was German and Beethowen was Austrian.
And yes, the Kingdom of Hungary was never fit to run itself. It was not because of its political unreadiness however, or because of the slave mentality, but because of one much more severe reason – its inhabitants have always been in the permanent turmoil of their self-determination and the question who they really are. The Kingdom was too preocuppied with the process of turning itself into one pure nation rather than in effectively running the society.
Hi vdx,
Have you been in the Amrican black ghetto and listened to their inhabitants? They always hate each other more than any outsider. The “little people” of this world will always be like that; and I respectfully submit that Slovaks and Hungarians are examples of “little people”, and that is our national tragedy.
Let me ask you something that I have been seriously wondering about for some time, and you are just the guy to ask it of: was the divorce from the Czechs a good idea, strategically and economically? Do you miss them? Were they of any use? Could they be of any help in the future? Would it be a good idea to get back together with them, like a “velvet remarriage”? Ex-lovers reconciled? I am not putting this up to mess with you! Your posts hit a raw truth that can also apply to the Slovaks as well; that neither of our peoples can go far on their own; that left to themselves they may flounder and stagnate. Whatever historical theory one can cook up to explain it away, the ugly truth goes on.
Honestly, I’m blown away when I visit Austria; Hungary and Slovakia should aspire to the same level. (The fact that they supported Hitler is a moot issue.) Maybe it goes with being German. Maybe, just maybe, it goes with giving orders for 500 years and not taking them. Despite their small territorial size, I cannot think of them as one of the world’s “little people”. It’s a state of mind.
Farkas László,
what you present from negative perspective can be from other side be seen as a priviledged position of small nations. Being an American, Chinese, Russian can be pleasant in the feeling that someone is part of something bigger. Yet this feeling is an illusion as a person remains to be only an element of bigger bag. In the outcome the person happens to be smaller and his voice will not be heard in broader circumstances. E.g state of California has a population of far above one of Slovakia or Hungary, yet it does not have its own seat in UN, nor G8. Thus California is not seen as a single unit, it’s seen to be only a part of greater bag. Small nations are in exceptional position by the simple fact that their distinction is tolerated. Being small open the possibilities to be free, unbounded and sometimes even calculative and irresponsible. Considering the broader circumstances of human history where the concept of unification prevailed, this is quite extraordinary. Besides that, being small is a very relative term. Large realms and kingdoms didn’t count more in population that small nations of today. Yet the former realms are still contemplated and exampled, but the people tend to forget that even small nations have the same capacity when comes to human resources than the former realms had.

Dissolution of Czechoslovakia was the right move for both sides even thought at the time it came as the initiative of two self-centered men with personal interests. Maturity and distinctive conditions were met a long time ago. If someone is able to govern himself it should be given him an opportunity and not to be looked as someone who needs to be under protectorate. Slovakia has proven it’s able to govern itself and that it’s the country with democratic traditions. Strategic and economic advantages came with the time. If you ask more czechoslovaks majority of them would agree, even though some sentimental reactions may arise. In 1993 they were many hot-head people on both sides of the frontier ready to make rubbish. Because of the fast process of separation which ran practically without public intervention, they didn’t get their chance. The result is that today both of us have a good friend and a good neigbour.
