Mayor Gábor Demszky suspended a Budapest city council meeting yesterday when Jobbik demonstrators staged a protest in favour of keeping a turul bird statue in the 12th District.
Local Fidesz mayor Zoltán Pokorni had initiated a proposal for retaining the statue, which was built without the permission of the council. However council leaders insisted that the statue must be dismantled.
The Council approved a Christian Democrat proposal to introduce concessionary BKV passes for single mothers from September. Later in the day governing coalition deputies, with the help of the Democratic Forum, approved a fourth metro line bid for EU funding.
