Hungary's campaign finance laws just there for show

gyurcsany_hands.jpgA recent AP piece over at portfolio.com stated how international democracy observers criticized Hungary's political parties for skirting campaign finance rules in the last general election, as they spent about ten times what they really should have, and that all of the parties were guilty of overspending. While going a ways toward explaining the Fidesz debt, what nonetheless caught our attention was a choice quote from the most powerful man in the country. Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány was quoted by the article as saying "nobody is in a position to check who paid for what." Well, that's good to know if one of us ever decides to run for office.

No one can accuse him of muddeling the waters. He obviously says what he thinks. Not so common for politicians.

Did anyone really think that it is possible, in any democratic country, to have total control? That is part of the democracy. For good or for worse.

It is probably not even possible to have total control in a dictatorship, they do tend to crumble after some time.

wow really?
