Signature collection drive to dissolve Parliament can proceed

The National Election Commission (OVB) has validated a signature collection sheet of a civil initiative aiming to dissolve the Parliament, writes news portal Origo.hu, based on a report by MTI. Another initiative which was validated aims to allow only individual representatives into the Parliament.

On Tuesday, the OVB validated a signature collection sheet submitted by the Foundation for Hungarian Civic Democracy (Magyar Polgári Demokráciáért Alapítvány) which says: “We are initiating a petition so that the Parliament formed in 2006 will dissolve itself.” According to laws, 50,000 signatures need to be collected within two months for the Parliament to be obligated to discuss the matter raised by a civil initiative.

Another signature collection sheet validated by the OVB on Tuesday was submitted by a private individual. He would like to see the law that grants parties the right to create regional and national lists at elections abolished so that only representatives from individual election districts can make it into Parliament. The submitter would prefer for a referendum to be held on the matter.

The OVB also approved one of the signature sheets submitted by the National Association of Hungarian Families (Magyar Családok Országos Szövetsége) which says: “Do you agree that at the next general elections, candidates should not have to collect nomination slips?”

Other initiatives by the same organization were rejected on grounds of being unclear. One of the questions promoted by the group is: “Do you agree that at the next general election, the current percentage threshold should not limit parties and social organizations from getting into Parliament?”
