Parties clash on cordon ruling

A heated exchange of statements erupted between Fidesz and the Socialist Party on Sunday after politicians from both parties gave differing interpretations of the recent court ruling terminating misdemeanor proceedings against Fidesz MPs who dismantled the cordon around Parliament on February 2 last year.

Fidesz MEP József Szájer, who was involved in removing the cordon, said the court ruling supports the view of Fidesz and offers satisfaction to all freedom-loving people.

Socialist MP Gergely Bárándy meanwhile said it is morally objectionable that certain Fidesz MPs have concluded from the court ruling that they did the right thing by removing the cordon. He quoted the ruling as declaring that the police had established the cordon lawfully and admonishing Fidesz MPs’ for carrying out “a rowdy act.”

Fidesz MP Zoltán Balog also drew the wrath of Socialist politicians after he told the periodical Magyar Szemle that a left-wing person in Hungary cannot be a decent Christian. Socialist Party spokesman István Nyakó said Balog has become unworthy of his post as House human rights committee chairman.

Fidesz caucus leader Tibor Navracsics said a co-ordinated libel campaign based on clear lies is being conducted against Balog.
