Hungarian Guard trial continues at Municipal Court

The second day of the trial against the far-right Magyar Gárda Egyesület (Hungarian Guard Society) was held at the Municipal Court under heightened police security on Monday. Magyar Gárda members were standing near the court as the trial took place.

Several organizations, including the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Religious Communities, the National Roma Authority, the Association of Hungarian Resistance Fighters and Anti-Fascists indicated that they want to participate in the trial as litigating parties.

Meanwhile, the Magyar Gárda, was supported as the defendant by the World Federation of Hungarians, Jobbik Magyarországért Mozgalom (Movement for a Better Hungary), Új Demokratikus Koalíció Párt, Túlélés 98 Egyesület and private individual Áron Mónus.

Magyar Gárda defence lawyer Tamás Gaudi-Nagy said the activity of the group does not give any cause for its dissolution, as it has not violated any law. He proposed that the court suspend proceedings and the Municipal Court appeal to the Constitutional Court, as the legal regulations meant to be applied in the trial are unconstitutional. The Municipal Court said it will decide whether to consider this proposal at a later date.
