Voters gauged by Nézőpont Intézet (Viewpoint Institute) have assessed the performance of the Gyurcsány cabinet as “barely passable” and 54% of them deem early elections as necessary.
The present cabinet thus fared the worst of all those since the change of regime, notching up 1.9 on a scale of five points. The first Gyurcsány cabinet fared better with 2.1 points. The Medgyessy cabinet was awarded 2.5 points and the Horn cabinet 2.8 points.
Those casting their votes remembered right-wing cabinets as the best since the change of regime, with the Antall and Boross cabinets taking 2.9 points and the Orbán cabinet coming out on top with 3.2 points.
In a poll commissioned by the conservative weekly Heti Válasz, 67% of Fidesz voters would welcome the establishment of a government of technocrats, as would 51% of Socialist voters. Some 47% envisage Fidesz forming a cabinet alone in 2010, while a further 14% said Fidesz will join forces with the Democratic Forum. Around 28% of voters would like to see Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán as prime minister, as against 10% who opted for incumbent Ferenc Gyurcsány.
