A wonderfully stupid but still illuminating political brouhaha has broken out in the southwest capital of Nagykanizsa, thanks to the local mayor’s unapologetic demand for a certain luxury car. According to index.hu, the kerfuffle started when the Fidesz-KDNP-backed polgármester, István Marton, put out a suspiciously precise tender for a new official car to replace his humdrum Opel Vectra, which pretty much ruled out any auto other than a super-deluxe Audi A6 like the one pictured above, which goes for roughly Ft 10 million (€40,000).
Now, the portal is reporting that local pols from the opposition Socialist and Liberal parties have moved to stall Marton’s attempt, initiating a special session of the town council to propose the withdrawal of the tender.
And at least one – the deputy chairman of the local Liberal chapter – says that if Marton doesn’t settle for a more conservative set of wheels, he will initiate a signature-collection drive to force the mayor’s retirement from office. Which, come to think of it, might be the best solution for Marton as well, as he had previously said he needed the plush ride because he’s “too old” for something less comfy.

He should get a old old Zsiguli with fury dice!
Austerity, my foot!
