Report alleges Orbán's plans for Hungary if re-elected

Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán is reportedly ready to halt the ongoing major state investment projects such as the fourth metro line project and would freeze motorway construction payments if he regains power.

The web portal Index reported on Thursday that Orbán broached the subject at a closed seminar organized by political scientist László Kéri at the drama university a few weeks ago. Kéri denied the report, however, asserting that Orbán had not spoken about the fourth metro line at the seminar. Index also quoted Orbán as saying in the first two years of the Fidesz term "no conventional governing would occur. Many things will hurt many people."

Orbán also paid tribute to former prime minister Gyula Horn for his abilities as a politician, and described Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány as an "idiot" and a "fool." Regarding the Magyar Gárda, Orbán said once in power, he will do what one-time regent Miklós Horthy did to the Arrow Cross movement: "deal out a few slaps and shoo them home."

Fidesz deputy chairman Mihály Varga said several working groups are developing Fidesz’s economic platform, but none of what Index reported figures in its plans, including the halting of major state projects.

Socialist Party spokesman István Nyakó said the mask has fallen and Orbán has remained what he was, as the fourth metro line would have cost much less if he had allowed its construction during his government tenure. The difference now, Nyakó added, is that Orbán wants to punish provincial Hungary and not just Budapest residents, by halting the motorway construction project.

Nyakó concluded that it would be good if Orbán made his platform clear in front of the general public and not behind closed doors.
