The national egoism and arrogance of the Great Powers after World War I has made peaceful coexistence among the peoples living in the Carpathian Basin impossible to the present day, Fidesz caucus leader Tibor Navracsics said Wednesday in a speech marking the 88th anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon. The treaty has been a disaster, not only for Hungarians, he said during his speech in Tapolca, north of Lake Balaton.
Navracsics said the referendum on December 5, 2004 could have superseded Trianon, but lack of interest by Hungarian voters and counter-propaganda by the government foiled that. The referendum on granting citizenship rights to Hungarians beyond the country’s borders failed due to a turnout of less than 25%.
Commemorations of the anniversary are continuing for several days throughout Hungary. Members of the paramilitary Magyar Gárda staged their own commemoration in Esztergom, where supporters of the Hungarian Self-Defence Movement and the irredentist 64 Counties Movement also participated.
On Sunday Calvinist pastor Lóránt Hegedűs Jr. will give a sermon at a service in the church on Szabadság tér in which he will protest against “Israeli endeavors to occupy Hungary and oppress the Palestinian people,” Népszabadság reports. A wreath is to be laid at the statue of inter-war Regent Miklós Horthy in the church vestibule.

if the writer of this pieces would spend more time getting his information right about the magyar gárda this piece would be a 100 %informative…
The magyar gárda is NOT a paramilitary organisation….
Géza,
“The magyar gárda is NOT a paramilitary organisation”
Doesn’t it depend on how you define paramilitary?
“A paramilitary organization is organised like an army and performs either civil or military functions” Cobuild English Dictionary
Why do you think this definition doesn’t apply?
I the Hungarians could free themselves form Christianity – and Judaism – and reinvent shamanism and the warrior ethics of old, now that would be something:)
Dear Adrian!
Why I think this definition doesn’t apply?
Cambridge Dictionary:
paramilitary
adjective
1 describes a group which is organized like an army but is not official and often not legal
2 connected with and helping the official armed forces:
In some countries, police and fire officers have paramilitary training
Because it is used in a negative way all over the press! And then scouting is a paramilitary organisation too?
Please read the jobbik website about the magyar gárda…
Géza
Géza, my sweet,
Just because something has a negative connotation doesn’t make it false.
Yes, the formation of the Magyar Gárda did make me look again on my own youthful involvement in the Boy Scouts. I would say that the boyscouts are a paramilitary organisation, though somewhat more ‘official’ than the MG, I don’t remember the government exploring the legal possibilities of banning the BS or the leader of the opposition promising to “smack them a couple of times and send them home.”
Though I remember uniforms and marches I don’t remember marching through areas inhabited by minorities as a means of intimidating them. At the time that was a trick of the Orange Order, who did so much to advance the peace and prosperity of Northern Ireland.
In reaction to your alledged negative portrayal of the MG by international media perhaps you can tell us something positive the MG has done for Hungary and its people.
Sorry, Géza, darling,
That Anonymous was me.
After French shameful defeats, in Sedan on 1870, on 1914 and 1940, France is doing whatever it takes to kip down Germany and Austria-Hungary. Since then, France, in a fierce struggle for existence, is denying the right of Germans, Austrian, Hungarian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Bulgarian to exist. The Trianon treaty turned the nationalities of Eastern Europe, who had always lived in coexistence, into sworn enemies.
French are enough ignorant not to understand that:
The Red Army, with 360 divisions, equipped with prestigious artillery, supported by armor, and decent air force, would invade them and stop at the Biscay Bay. They ignore the Anglo Americans efforts, and their ultimate sacrifices to save them. What goes around comes around. One day they will get what are looking for, but this day will be the last day of Europe too.
