Fidesz leads way in online politics

Of all the Hungarian parties, Fidesz operates the most sophisticated – and also costliest – website, stop.hu has found. Although citizens increasingly use the Internet to gather information about politics, the other parties are failing to take advantage of the available opportunities, experts say.

The experts asked by stop.hu examined the websites of the five biggest parties and concluded that Fidesz’s is way ahead of its rivals, incorporating updates on the hot political topics as well as multimedia content. According to the experts, the site must have cost at least Ft 3 million (€12,000) to develop.

The MSZP website is trailing some distance behind the opposition. The information is too poorly organized for it to be referred to as a portal, although it is improving, with costs estimated at around Ft 1 million.

The SZDSZ site has an attractive design and a fresh supply of information. KDNP has regular updates on current political events but poor design, probably due to a lack of funds. The MDF website was deemed to be poor, both in terms of content and design.

All the main parties launched their website in 1996, except KDNP, which went online in 2003.
