Little would have anyone thought that a single accent mark would keep Hungary from experiencing a bloody government, but that is the case. Ordinarily, when the prime minister goes on vacation, the head of the prime minister’s office assumes temporary authority, in this case, one Péter Kiss. But given that this year Kiss will be going on holiday at the same time as Prime Minister Gyurcsány, the temporary head of government from July 29th to August 3rd will be Finance Minister János Veres, reports napi.hu. While Veres’s last name means red, if you add an accent mark to the first “e,” it becomes “véres,” or “bloody.” Considering that in the twentieth century Hungary experienced reigns of terror of varying colors, we’re quite glad that accusations surrounding Véres Veres are of a somewhat more ordinary nature.
