Mayor of the 12th District in Budapest Zoltán Pokorni has written a public letter to Budapest mayor Gábor Demszky, asking him why they are continuing a “witch hunt” against the Turul memorial in his district.
Demszky answered Pokorni by saying “I was surprised by your letter because the Budapest Municipal Court ruled to demolish the statue, due to it having no construction permit,” and added that Pokorni has consequently asked Budapest council to overrule a binding court ruling.
Meanwhile far-right party Jobbik and the Christian Democrats will hold a joint “peaceful force demonstration” on Thursday night to protect the memorial, Előd Novák of the Jobbik Action Group announced. The Smallholders Civic Association (KPE), a satellite organisation of Fidesz, has also joined the campaign, while Fifth District KPE council member Sándor Bartal will make a speech: “thus the ice has been broken,” he asserted. The Socialist youth organisation may organise a counter-demonstration, Novák added.
The self-styled Hungarian Self-protection Movement has urged “all patriots and resistance members to come, and fighters to prepare.” Far-right blogger Tamás “Tomcat” Polgár wrote that “all Zionist barbarians should be made to flee.”
Let’s hope they get showered by freedom of speech eggs!

As for the Turul, the building permit was not denied because it’s structurally unsafe or whatever, but because it may offend some hyper-sensitive anti-Hungarian minorities. The people want it to stay there, and the hired help (government) should do as they are told.
Anyone who is offended by our national symbols such as the Crown and the Turul are free to protest, but should not be allowed to overturn the wishes of the Hungarian majority.

The statue should not have been built without the proper permits (regardless of the motives for not granting the permit). Now that it has been built, I actually think the effort to remove it makes little sense, and provides a platform for dangerous, fringe elements (or sadly maybe not so fringe) of the society to create a new “martyr”. Politically, the Mayor’s office should have dropped this issue some time ago.
The one irony I do enjoy, however, is that the XII ker. government is notorious for being difficult with granting building permits, and often denies them for no principled reason or otherwise blackmails private property owners to do what they want such owners to do! Moreover, the local government or key people within the bueracracy are also, I am sad to say, “open” to being influenced in their decision making in non-traditional ways. So for Pokorni and the XII ker. to be “up in arms” over this issue, and for them to argue that building without a permit in this case is acceptable, that for me is an irony that I find very enjoyable to witness.
Finally, as a piece of art, the statue is crap.

The question is what Pokorni’s party friends want to take this. They want a big confrontation, just to let the MSZP-Gov’t, stand out as “the Bastion against Fascism”? I can understand the tactics of the other side, then lately MSZP has been increasing support in Budapest. Probably an ugly fight around this ugly statue will increase MSZP’s support and radicalize Fidesz-supporters to give Jobbik a boost.
Because there is a breach of regulations from XII-district MSZP can stand a bit above all and distance themselves a bit from Demsky (he is anyway doing his last term).
As I understand it is the place where the statue is built that is a problem. That type of place, close to a tram-line, needs Budapest City’s approval. If XII-district had built it somewhere else, as I understand it, Budapest City would have nothing to say about it?
The official cost was 30 MHUF, but they are rich in the XII-district, so who cares? TGhe problem is that we others in BP will have to pick up the next bill – The expected riots. A prolonged situation easily go up to 300 MHUF. Thank you Pokorni!

1. Because it was not an abstract ideology like “totalitarianism” that sentenced me to years but flesh-blood Commie Jews with eyeglasses.
2. The Internet. There are such a vast array of info and documents available online on History and Peoples that I could look now into obscure details that was hidden due to censorship or whitewashing or simply I had no previous knowledge of. My own life and access to documents formed my opinion.
I learned many things like George Lukacs the son of a wealthy Jewish banker was the founder of the Western Marxist ideology, revered academic and murderer while in the government of Bela Kun in 1919.
Or Herbert Marcuse the Chief ideologist of the Frankfurt School who introduced the notion of Political Correctness to subvert the society.
