No deal between ethnic Hungarian parties in Romania

Béla Markó, head of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) yesterday refused to reopen talks with Transylvania’s Hungarian Coalition Party (MPP) after the latter decided Sunday night to accept an RMDSZ offer of co-operation in Romania’s parliamentary elections in November. The RMDSZ deadline for acceptance was Saturday.
The MPP initially refused to accept the offer of 15% of seats won by the two parties, saying they wanted to take part in the elections as equal partners.

The change of heart came too late for Markó, who said the MPP had had ample time. His party is willing to hold talks only with Calvinist Bishop and MEP László Tőkés, he added. Tőkés was in Oradea on Monday for talks with MPP leaders.

    Too bad the two Hungarian parties couldn’t come to some kind of agreement to work together. As the saying goes, united we stand, divided we fall.
    Eva Balogh, in her blog, puts all the blame for this fiasco on Viktor Orbán. After all, he was the one who encouraged the formation of the Magyar Polgári Párt. Now the Hungarians in Transylvania are divided.

    Indeed, it is too bad – however there is still hope and they will be meeting again.
    Please remember: whether there is truth to it or not, ESB tends to lay blame with Orban for everything that ails Hungary/hungarians.
