While we’re savoring the joys of Socialist-run Hungary circa 1996, we also see that Index.hu’s Tegnapi újság (“yesterday’s news”) blog has unearthed an amazing bit of cyber-history dating from ten years before that. Back on August 11, 1986, the “international” edition of US newsweekly Time published a “cover package” of features about Hungary. Both make for very interesting reading. One is a backgrounder titled “Hungary Building Freedoms Out of Defeat,” that paints 80s Hungary as a veritable paradise, at least compared to the neighborhood. (“The streets once strewn with bodies are jammed with eager shoppers and gaudily garbed Western tourists…”) The other is a big Q&A with János Kádár, in which our then-head red sounds like a wise and humble statesman, at least compared to the people who are currently running the place into the ground.

We have seen (and still see) a lot worse than Kadar. We should just dig up what’s left of his bones and clone him. We need someone who knows how to deal with the Russians. We still depend on them.

As soon as Russia gobbled up the Ukaraine and shows up at the border, all the ex communists will turn to Russo-fascist overnight and invite the 2 headed eagle to protect Hungary.
The Turul’s nest will be given to the Eagle and protected from the crowd.
