RMDSZ to go it alone in Romanian ballot

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) will run independently at the November parliamentary elections, president Béla Markó announced at the weekend. Markó said the Transylvanian Hungarian National Council (EMNT) headed by Calvinist Bishop and MEP László Tőkés had at the very last moment once again refused to sign an election co-operation agreement.

Markó quoted Tőkés as saying he cannot sign the agreement as he feels he cannot have the full support of the entire spectrum of groups outside the RMDSZ. Markó said another reason for the rejection was that the EMNT had found the parliamentary seats offered to them by the Alliance to be too few.
