The budget and tax plan put forward by Hungary’s Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány should be the basis for the Socialist minority government’s forthcoming tax and budget bills, Imre Szekeres, Socialist deputy leader and defence minister, told MTI on Tuesday.
Szekeres, a key figure in the Socialist party, said that the government was confident of obtaining a parliamentary majority to pass the legislation.
He insisted Gyurcsany had proposed measures that would ease the tax burden on businesses and individuals and would be capable of stimulating economic growth without disrupting social spending or imposing new burdens on the ordinary public.
Szekeres said that a programme should be designed that would attract support outside the party, too.
“A programme must be prepared with which we can obtain the support of others,” he said. “We are confident that we can generate that support,” he added.
