Everyone eventually reaches a point in their lives when they throw their arms up in frustration and shout "to hell with it!" Ferenc Gegesy of the Free Democrats and Budapest District IX mayor reached just that point over the weekend after his party held a faction meeting, which resulted in Gegesy leaving his former party of nineteen years and resigning his parliamentary mandate, index.hu reports. Gegesy stated he does not agree with the direction the current party leadership has taken, but added that the party should act independently of the Socialists, and dig their heels in on the tax reform project János Kóka promoted. Gegesy is not the first former Free Dem to continue on as an independent district mayor upon leaving the party, as Sziget festival-hating Tamás Derce of Újpest and very Fidesz-friendly István Tarlós did the same thing. Tarlós formerly a Free Democrat? I was just as surprised to read that as you probably are.
