Hungary supports the planned NATO membership of Georgia and Ukraine and welcomes their invitation to the organisation’s membership action plan, the foreign minister said on Wednesday.
“We believe it especially important that NATO should have a common position regarding the two countries,” said Kinga Goncz.
Instead of introducing sanctions, dialogue must be maintained with Russia regarding the crisis with Georgia and it should be clearly communicated that Russia must also abide international norms, she said.
Hungary considers both the EU-backed Nabucco and the Russia-backed Southern Stream gas pipelines important. However, further diversification opportunities are also being sought, such as the possibility to import liquid gas through Croatia and to establish links between regional networks, she said.
