Amnesty International asks politicians to avoid Saturday demonstration

Amnesty International yesterday advised politicians to stay away from Saturday’s demonstration against violence and exclusion entitled Tarka Magyar (Diverse Hungarian). The presence of any politicians would result in this civil initiative becoming involved with political goals, the human rights body explained.

Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány will, as a citizen, sign a statement for the demonstration and take part with his wife, a government spokesman asserted on Tuesday. Organisers earlier asked the five parliamentary party leaders to sign a declaration to avoid any party appropriating the demonstration. Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán was the first to sign it.

Gyurcsány also urged supporters of the Hungarian Democratic Charta to attend Saturday’s event.
