Olympic champion accused of being a Kádár-era informer

Three-time Olympic water polo champion György Kárpáti was an informer in the Communist regime, the website Hírszerzõ claimed on Wednesday. Kárpáti denied the report and said he will take legal action.

According to the website, Kárpáti was an informer for the secret police from 1962 to 1987, as evidenced by a file in the Historical Archives of the State Security Services.

Kárpáti reportedly worked under the code name “Halasi”, and his contact officer in the counterintelligence expressed satisfaction with his work during the 1964 Olympics.

Kárpáti has been a member of Fidesz’s sports section since 2003 and was elected an honorary citizen of Budapest two weeks ago at the proposal of the Budapest chapter of the Socialist Party.

Kárpáti said his support for Fidesz and its leader Viktor Orbán could be behind the allegations.
