Orbán decries economic “austerity” proposals at national summit

Main opposition Fidesz party leader Viktor Orban said at Saturday’s National Summit that the idea to introduce a new austerity package to fend off the impacts of the global financial turmoil was unacceptable.

He said the Socialist government is unable to contain the crisis because of its irresponsible policies in the past.

Orban accused the government of incompetence and blamed it for having weakened the country’s ability to defend itself from the consequences of the crisis.

He called for a renewed programme to boost economic growth based on tax cuts and a consistent fight against corruption, to be complemented with political changes.
