Tensions rise as Hungarian nationalists apprehended in Slovakia

“It is unacceptable that Hungarian Nazis march on Slovak territory in uniforms,” questioning and threatening Slovak independence, Prime Minister Robert Fico said Saturday after 28 members of the Nyíregyháza-based National Guard were detained in eastern Slovakia on charges of carrying emblems of tyranny and propaganda against human rights.

The 28 went to Kralovsky Chlmec to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the First Vienna Award, in which the Axis Powers gave part of Czechoslovakia to Hungary. They also laid wreaths at a local memorial to those killed in World Wars One and Two. All were released on Sunday after criminal proceedings against them were initiated. They have returned to Hungary.

Slovak Foreign Minister Ján Kubis sought an explanation on the telephone from his counterpart Kinga Göncz for the march and then called on the Hungarian cabinet to pass a law on taking action against extremists. He spoke at an extraordinary press conference on Saturday along with Fico and Interior Minister Robert Kalinak.

Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány has repeatedly declared that he considers a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico important, if they can hold substantial talks, government spokesman Dávid Daróczi told reporters on Sunday. Daróczi said Gyurcsány continues to argue that problems should be resolved, if possible through dialogue, rather than heightened.

Ján Slota, head of the far right Slovak National Party, urged EU institutions to take action against Hungary.

Unbelievable and unprecedented export of extremism abroad and to Slovakia reflects sterility and incompetence of hungarian government.

is this “National Guard” the Magyar Garda or some other group??

  3. As much as i can see and agree with the comments about the Nazi uniforms and comments etc i wonder how the Slovak Government can criticise with any moral authority.
If these people can be held under accusation of carrying emblems of propoganda against human rights then what is the Benes Decrees if not a violation of human rights?
The Benes Decrees were a series of laws, edicts and decrees enacted by the then Czech president Edvard Benes to expell, torture, murder and main all hungarians, ethnic-Germans and other so-called undesirables in a manner more at home in the Middle Ages. Yes the Nazi Regime were wrong but to kill a child or rape a pregnant mother is not the way to go. Ghandi said take “an eye for an eye and the whole world will go blind”. Maybe we are all blind to acts of pure vengance which run contrary to human rights legislation throughout Europe. The Slovak government needs to take stock of its own actions and apply its legislation equally as well as repelling the racist Benes Decrees.
However when Jan Slovak stated that “Hungarians are the cancer of the nation” a few years back did he really expect the Hungarian nation to kick back?

National Garda is another group centered around north-eastern hungarian city Nyíregyháza. It cooperates with Magyar Gadra and counts some hundred members. They declare ideology of hungarian fascist party lead by Ferenc Szalazy in 1940′ties. Apprehended radicals were wearing copies of nazi uniforms. Members of Magyar garda had expressed their sympathies to them previously today.

    douglas brough,
it’s poinless how some Hungarians keep crying and crying again over what was done long time ago as a result of the war and become once and for all a part of the history. Benes Decrees were the consequence of what was happening during the war. Of course that the laws proclaiming general punishment are unacceptable in today societies, but what we have now cannot be compared to actions taken in completely other circumstances of war or immediate post-war era. There is no point in abolishing Benes Decrees. There can be no other explanation of this than just someone’s trying to reverse result of the world war – as well as in the case of Trianon treaty. It’s most silly if someone thinks it’s just the current slovak government that won’t acknowledge to this. None slovak government would.

  6. Mariska says:

There is absolutely no good reason for the Benes Decrees to still be on the books. Full stop.

  7. Vdx,
You say that it is no good crying over spilt milk and that the Hungarians shouldn’t complain about the Benes Decrees and what has happened in its recent history. You also suggest that laws proclaiming geral punishment are unacceptable in todays society but that it can not be compared to actions taken in completely different circumstances. I agree that circumstances were very different but the concept of oppression continues to this very day. The Czech and Slovak governments have recently reaffirmed the Benes Decrees as valid legal order which takes these laws, edicts and decrees from the history books and puts them on the plates of the current politicians and campaigners for equality.
By definition of the world “expulsion” those expelled can not return to their homes.
The Hungarians as well as the Germans, Japanese, Americans, Czechs and every other group of victims of World War II have the same right to their homes etc.
As much as i approve of the right of the Jews to seek redress etc because of the Holocaust i have to wonder if you would be commenting in the same manner as you are because of the Hungarian and ethnic-Germannoppression known as the Benes Decrees.
Jews have a right to return to their homes; in the same manner Hungarians and Germans should have the same right.
In this world of human rights legislation, human rights musty be attributed to all in a universal manner and not selectively as is currently the case.

    Douglas brough,
ok, first of all, it was not slovak side which opened this problem. The declaration of slovak parliament came as a reaction to a request of magyar coalition party to open the decrets. And it was also a reaction to some claims coming from hungarian representatives from Hungary. The only thing slovak and czech governments acknowledged in their declarations was that accords and arrangements made on peace conferences after the WWII stay intact.
Secondly, although you claim to approve the right of Jews to seek redress, I doubt you accept the reality of the war as the reality where certain groups were prefered on behalf of another ones. It’s worth of notice that in the war there have been two sides – the axis powers (oppressors) and the allies. Therefore it’s highly inaproppriate to throw Germans and Japanese in the same bag with Americans and Czechs.
Prior to the war the citizens of Czechoslovakia, ethnic Germans and ethnic Hungarians, openly collaborated with nazi Germany and fascist Hungary and largely contributed to the destruction of Czechoslovakia and anexing of the part of Slovakia. In subsequent years they exloited their status on behalf of Czechoslovaks. Ethnic hungarians were participating on Horthy’s white terror in Slovakia. Benes decrets were issued as a reaction to these war events (which hungarian side by the way do not even admit till this day and is not even willing to excuse for them).

    -continued-
An opening (abolishing) of Benes Decrets is generally understood as an attempt to revise results of the WWII and thus has its roots in not accepting the events of the war. Of course the whole problem leads to the year 1920 and Trianon Treaty which is the Gordian knot of slovak-hungarian relationships (as well as serb-hungarian and romanian-hungarian) because that was the time (and place) where problems of many nations accumulated and were solved.
“Jews have a right to return to their homes; in the same manner Hungarians and Germans should have the same right.”
Your view is absolutely biassed if you’d like to compare the situation of Germans and Hungarians, who were displaced, to the situation of Jews, who have been chased and killed during the whole war.
There might be talks about compensations based on individual level, but the abolishing of Benes decrets is absolutely excluded. The only thing it would lead to would be unprecedented legal and property claims from dozens thousands of hungarian citizens, many of them actively participating on repressions. This claim is like a request coming from a criminal who, once he spent years in a prison, come after 20 years and requests compensation for passed years forgetting he was in that prison for a reason.

Benes decrets was crimmanla and based on Lies, If Bosnia,Croatia Slovakia Kosovo etc have had the opportunity to reshape there borders in the last decades then why not Hungary? There is a lot of Lies in the World Wars that have to be exposed, so now a better time then ever to heal the deep wounds, just because the new generation has been born into believing a lie dosent mean we cannot examine what truthfully belongs to the Crown Lands of Hungary.. VDX you are Biased in favour of the continuation of Lies, so you are a ignorant stubborn Lier!! So piss off this site because you aggrevate me and the truth seekers, in your continious Pan Slavian Crap!!

  11. vdx says:

    Hotpaprika,
fortunately, the primitives like you don’t shape international politics. It would be very bad if the things went that far. The primitives like you invoking nonexistent retributions and unable to respect territorial status quo led us to that war in the first place. Let me ask you where do you have a king for that “Crown Lands” of yours? Because you will definitely need one once you conquer half of Europe.
If my words were lies like you keep saying you should be able to give me at least some hints where do I lie. Not just repeating that I’m the liar spreading the pan-slavic propaganda and you are “the true seeker”. If you are “the true seeker” my advise for you would be to join some apocalyptic sect, bury 100 metres under the ground and wait for the world to end. When it’s done, you can walk out and repopulate the planet. I’m sure no Slavs nor other insect would bother you again.

If you are too lazy to do the research yourself then stay ignorant, im not wasting my time on useless ignoramous, all you do is write trash that you are always submitting on this forum!

He tells the hungarian cabinet what???! I don’t think it is his place to do so….and then let’s take a look at the Benes Decrees…
The post-trianon story will be a problem for many years to come!
