Sólyom loses popularity after national summit snub

State President László Sólyom’s popularity index has decreased by five points, according to a fresh poll by Szonda Ipsos, summarized by Népszabadság. The pollster speculated that the slump was caused by Sólyom’s decision to skip last month’s national summit initiated by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány to discuss ways of fighting the effects of the global financial crisis. Despite the loss in popularity, Sólyom remains Hungary’s most popular politician.

Sólyom is still leading the list with 45 points, followed by Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz, Fidesz Chairman Viktor Orbán and Parliamentary Speaker Katalin Szili.

MDF Chairwoman Ibolya Dávid lost the second most points, three, bringing her popularity index down to 39.

The least popular politicians are Finance Minister János Veres and Free Democrat caucus leader János Kóka.
