According to a report in tabloid Blikk earlier this week summarized on fn.hu, the Liberal SZDSZ has asked István Vágó – the host of the recently-cancelled local version of “Who wants to be a millionaire” (Legyen Ön is milliomos!) – to join its slate for the European Parliament elections coming up next summer. The party will not decide on the list until early next year, but it said Vágó could be included among the candidates, as he agrees with its liberal values. (He has apparently even received threatening phone calls from people put off by his leftish views.) Vágó has yet to decide whether to accept the invitation. Oddly, in a recent interview he suggested that one reason he might want to change careers from TV personality to MEP was money. “The choice isn’t easy,” he said. “If I look at my wallet, I’d certainly go, but if I look at my work up until now, I’d rather stay.”
As for whether he could win, according to a poll by Blikk and TNS Hungary, Vágó is considered Hungary’s most “authentic” media personality, perhaps because he once admitted that he rigged the results of the show. Let’s hope he doesn’t try to do the same at the polls.

The media is becoming too powerful. In the USA some fat chick, named Oprah has a daily show, so friggin popular, that she makes billions. If that’s not bad enough, she has a huge influence among bored housewives, and I bet if she decided to run for president (who knows, it may happen) she would have a pretty good chance, simply because she’s on the telly every day (and also a black woman). The Austrian import body-building freak “Terminator” was popular enough to get elected governor of California, so really anything can happen.
Authentic? How does being a Gyurcsány ass-licker and MSZP myrmidon make someone authentic in politics?

The USA has a long tradition of voting for people based on their fame. I notice that Stan didn’t draw attention to Ronald Reagan or Clint Eastwood when mentioning actors turned politicians. Or that McCain OvenChips used his ‘military hero’ fame after Korea to create a long and lucrative political career. And they’re just recent examples. President Jackson was formerly a famous general, the Duke of Wellington became PM after acheiving massive fame during the Napoleonic Wars. Julius Caesar became dictator on the back of the fame he won fighting for Rome in Gaul. History is littered with famous people becoming politicians/dictators/rulers/leaders.
(Note to readers: please include more historical examples from your own knowledge. My examples are Anglo-centric and I’d like some more flavour. Or we can just get on with bashing Anglos for all the world’s ills). It’s just that howadays the media is a more likely route to fame than being a soldier. Some would say it’s a more democratic method of becoming famous. All I can say is that it’s a lot less bloody.

Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” was published first during his prison term in 1923, He did not become ReichsKancellor of Germany until 1933,thus he was a best seller prior to rising to total power,though sales really took of after 1933 of course,throughout the world.

Hallo, this news is not a news! Point one a responsible journalist does not take Blikk as a resource… Point two the SzDSz’s popularity is around 2% in the population, nobody will vote for their candidate, at the next election they will not get into the parliament. The same thing happened with them what have hapenned with the Kisgazdák when they were rein in coalition with Fidesz, the bigger party “eaten up” the smaller. And btw. if any of you claims himself a liberal make a list of liberal values and try to find just one thing they did, they have not done anything for the gay, for the Gypsies, The woman, for minorities in general, nothing for the kids or olds or for the disabled, they even more corrupt than the socialist(oh Mr. Demszky bought himself a Villa on the Croatian coasts a while ago, probably from the money what the City Hall forgets to give into BKV’s budget))) they ruined the health care and the education in the country!
