Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said on Monday that he would instruct his ministers to draft bills implementing the six-point proposal he had presented to his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico in Komarno, Slovakia, on Saturday.
Gyurcsany said that Hungary’s five parliamentary parties had arrived at a political consensus on the key issues at a meeting held at his initiative earlier today.
In a letter addressed to Fico on Sunday, Gyurcsany said the Hungarian government would design the necessary legislation within 30 days, and would implement its portion of the tasks arising from the six-point package even if Slovakia failed to follow suit.
In Komarno, Gyurcsany had proposed that both governments guarantee that they will provide extra funding and affirmative action in support of the educational and cultural institutions of ethnic minorities, while minority schools should be free to use textbooks published in one another’s country.
He also called for Hungarian and Slovak politicians to approve a code of conduct on national and ethnic minority issues, and set up a body to conduct joint investigations and adjudicate in cases when ethnic minorities suffer harm.
Gyurcsany asked the Slovak National Council to consider electing an ombudsman for national and ethnic minorities and to consider suspending and revoking its decree limiting the use of Hungarian national symbols.
I do not understand why this government lays down for these Slavs…
Slovakia, does not provide the basic human rights for it’s minorities. The recent government dare to state that in Slovakia officially only one nation lives it is the Slovak and the expression Carpathian Basin violates the territorial integrity of Slovakia… I’m very sorry that they have no history, culture and their integrity is so fragile…But they hate Hungarians so much, they should invent there own coat of arms instead of using St. Andrews ( a king from the House of Arpad, khm). Or build a capital… Hungary should make a visa for Slovaks and put the border stations back. So Hungary should turn to the EU to force Slovakia to drop symbols they implemented from the otherwise so hatred Hungarian History! And if the Slovaks do not allow their minorities to practice their language and the Slovakian government keeps boycotting minority education than apply for autonomy at the EU. But I think according to that (unlike in Hungary) the ultra nationalist are in the coalition, there is nothing to talk with people like Fico, or Capkovic and especially with Slota! It’s like somebody wanted to talk with MIEP and Magyar Garda about the proper usage of national symbols…
