President Laszlo Solyom has nominated Maria Orban Havasi to preside over the Supreme Court, MTI learnt on Tuesday.
Solyom will present his nominee to representatives of the five parliamentary parties on Thursday.
Havasi is Solyom’s second nominee for the post. His previous one, Andras Baka, a former judge on the Strasbourg Human Rights Court, was rejected by parliament in May. The high court has been without a chief justice since June 24, when the six-year term of Zoltan Lomnici expired.
The country’s president has the right to appoint the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, but the appointment must be confirmed by a two-thirds majority in parliament.
Havasi has been president of the Gyor Court of Appeals since 2004. If elected, she will be Hungary’s first female Supreme Court Chief Justice.
