While it’s becoming rather clear that Hungary’s attempts to build a metaphoric bridge of understanding to Slovakia have failed miserably, Slovakia is keen to build a bridge to Hungary, though only of the steel and cement variety. According to Népszabadság, Magyar-maddening Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (left) said he wants to speed up plans for construction of a bridge between the “twin cities” of Komárno and Komárom, which Budapest has not been pushing too hard as of late. Whether Fico’s motivation is to foster a practical effort to deepen integration between two neighbors, or just to appear magnanimous while scoring a juicy passive-aggressive poke in the eye to Hungarian PM Ferenc Gyurcsány (right, appropriately looking like he’s about to be duped) probably depends on which side of the river you are on, though in either case it seems like a smart play. Back to you, Feri.
Fico favors building bridge to Hungary, but only literally
