Justice minister says Slovak response over police brutality charge disappointing

The Slovak interior minister’s response to the Slovak police’s brutal assault at a football match in Dunajska Streda is disappointing, Hungarian Justice Minister Tibor Draskovics told MTI in Brussels on Thursday.

Robert Kalinak’s letter does not contain any evidence or explanation for the brutal police action on November 1, in which Hungarian supporters were assaulted, Draskovics said.

The minister suggested that Hungary was still waiting to receive the video recordings cited in a letter by the Slovak police right after the events. He noted that what had been released to the Hungarian public did not justify the “very serious” police action.

It is possible that the Slovak police made a mistake, Draskovics said, adding that if that is the case, “conclusions should be drawn” and there must be guarantees that such events will not recur.

Draskovics was attending a meeting of European Union interior ministers in Brussels, and had been scheduled to talk with Kalinak. The Slovak minister, however, did not attend the EU meeting and proposed a bilateral meeting with the Hungarian side.

Draskovics indicated that he had accepted the proposal, and said that the meeting “would soon take place.”
