A new poll by Szonda Ipsos has for the first time found Fidesz chairman and former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to be Hungary’s most popular politician, daily Népszabadság reports.
The opposition leader just edged out State President László Sólyom and Speaker of Parliament Katalin Szili.
Orbán, Szili and Sólyom all received 45 points in the poll, but Orbán received more support from his voters than other politicians from theirs. Orbán received 78 points from Fidesz voters, 19 from Socialist supporters and 29 from undecided voters, compared to 38, 59 and 43 for Szili and 60, 36, 39 for Sólyom.
The three were followed by Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz (43), Agriculture Minister József Gráf (39) and MDF Chairwoman Ibolya Dávid (37).
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány was the fifth most unpopular political figure tracked, with 30 points. The least popular individual, according to the survey, was former Alliance of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) chairman and current party caucus leader János Kóka, who received just 24 points.
