Politician linked to corruption case ends justice ministry contract

Péter Lusztig, whose links to the Justice Ministry have recently come under scrutiny, has asked that his contract not be extended beyond the end of this year, Népszabadság reports.

Lusztig cited “other commitments” for his decision, and no explanation was given for the timing of the announcement.

On Wednesday the corruption trial of former Socialist MP János Zuschlag featured a telephone recording in which Lusztig offered to help Zuschlag in his then capacity as police chief of Baranya County.

Lusztig, for his part, has claimed that his offer of help to Zuschlag was entirely within the confines of legal procedure, and that this is standard procedure for anyone in the party who has had their office searched, Népszabadság reported via zoom.hu. He insisted that he was not offering Zuschlag any extra-legal aid.

Cut and run before any investigation to kick him out, thus protecting his pension and bonus packages. And in today’s Hungary he will probably get away with this ‘quiet’ option.
