Fidesz lead over Socialists widens five points in latest poll

The main opposition Fidesz party widened its already massive lead over the minority governing Socialists (MSZP) in December, according to recent polls by Szazadveg-Forsense and Tarki released to MTI on Wednesday.

The Szazadveg-Forsense poll, conducted on a 1,000-person sample from December 2 to 12, revealed that Fidesz’s backing among the entire voting public stayed level at 24 percent while support for the Socialists fell by four percentage points compared to the November poll, standing at 14 percent.

Among decided voters, Fidesz gained five points to 57 percent while the Socialists fell back by five points to 32 percent from the previous month.

Were the elections held now, neither the liberal Free Democrats, nor the conservative Democratic Forum would be able to retain their places in parliament where the entry threshold is 5 percent.

After running neck-and-neck for two months, this time more respondents saw Fidesz leader Viktor Orban being better suited to the prime ministership than Ferenc Gyurcsany, the current government chief.

The Tarki poll, conducted from November 27 to December 12 on a sample of 1,000 people of voting age, showed a similar pattern.

Fidesz’s support increased from 31 percent in November to 35 percent in December among the whole voting sample, while support for the Socialists plummeted from 19 percent to 16 percent.

Among voters with a clear party preference and willingness to vote, Fidesz leads the Socialists 61 to 26 percent. The gap between the two big parties widened from 32 to 35 percent over the past month.

The two smaller parliamentary parties failed to reach the 5 percent threshold.
