Orbán says gov’t to use IMF loan to “buy votes”; urges thorough accounting

The disbursement of the loan the International Monetary Fund has recently granted to Hungary needs to be subjected to “thorough historical and theoretical scrutiny,” Viktor Orban, head of the main opposition Fidesz said on Wednesday, suggesting that the funds drawn would be used for election campaigning by the minority governing Socialists.

According to an interview Orban gave to Wednesday’s national daily Magyar Nemzet, it will need to be ascertained whether IMF wanted to assist the country with the 15-billion-dollar credit line or the Socialist Party.

It has yet to be seen if the purpose was “to keep Hungary’s next government in check,” the paper quoted Orban as saying.

“The Socialists have certainly not changed and will spend the money,” Orban said. “They will use all resources available to buy votes in a campaign of lies” for the 2010 general elections, he added.
