In 2008 the Hungarian government’s policy focused on “survival at any price”, main opposition Fidesz parliamentary group leader Tibor Navracsics told a press conference in Budapest on Monday.
The government aimed to survive the year and keep Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany in power at any price, he said.
After the opposition’s success in March referendum on key government reforms and the breakup of the Socialist-liberal governing coalition in April, the Socialist minority government stumbled from one scandal to another and concentrated all personal and financial resources on securing its minority status, if need be, even by purchasing votes or forming temporary coalitions, Navracsics said.
In turn, Fidesz closed a successful year as the referendum cast light on the government’s aborted policies and its Strong Hungary programme demonstrated that the party offers a viable political alternative, he said.
