Hungarian NGOs quit government anti-corruption body

Transparency International, the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union and independent expert Péter Hack have quit the government’s anti-corruption co-ordination board, saying that it has become irrelevant.

“We will not participate in work that makes no sense,” said Noémi Alexa, head of Transparency International in Hungary.

“The body has developed a serious proposal but for a long time it appears that there is no interest in it. We worked but nothing has happened,” Alexa summarised.

The government set up the body in September 2007 to advise it on how to limit corruption.

Transparency complained that none of the advisory board’s recommendations had been adopted since February, and that its workings had become unreliable.

The organisation said it remains willing to work with the government on substantial anti-corruption efforts.
