The "iron curtain of energy" between western and eastern Europe should be dismantled, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany told the press in Bratislava on Thursday, and called for integration of the gas and electric networks of the region.
Gyurcsany spoke following a Visegrad Four summit meeting on the gas crisis and said that a lack of ties between the energy systems of the two parts of Europe makes new members of the European Union a lot more vulnerable than old ones.
It must be made clear to Kiev and Moscow that they cannot force European consumers to pay the price for their dispute, and added that Europe was committed to defend its own interests.
At the meeting, Gyurcsany raised the possibility that the European Union could consider granting financial aid to Ukraine to help the country service its debt to Russia, should there be financial reasons behind Ukraine's reluctance to forward Russian gas supplies. Talking to Hungarian journalists following the summit, he also said that if similar disputes between Russia and Ukraine recurred in the future, Hungary could take over ownership of the gas supplies at the Russia-Ukraine border rather than at Hungary's border with Ukraine, as it is currently done. A forwarding agreement with Ukraine could then be made, and Hungary's purchasing gas from Russia would not be impacted by possible Russia-Ukraine disputes, he added.
On the subject of the planned Nabucco gas pipeline, which would supply Europe from the Caspian area rather than from Russia, bypassing Ukraine, Gyurcsany suggested that the project could be prefinanced by the EU. He argued that the scheme was not only a business issue, it was important from security and political aspects as well.
Prime ministers of Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland met in Bratislava to discuss issues concerning the Russia-Ukraine gas dispute. The summit was attended by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
Barroso told a press conference after the meeting that the EU asked Russia and Ukraine to come to an agreement. "Our priority is to see that some countries do not endanger the interests and economies of other states due to bilateral conflicts," he said. Barroso also said that Ukraine has accepted specific conditions of the EU concerning sending out a special international group of observers that will monitor the gas transit through Ukraine. "We are still negotiating with the Russians," he added.

The simple solution for the gas dispute would be to get the Russian and Ukrainian decision makers into a room. Lock the door and turn off the heat.
See if they can come up with something before they freeze to death. Either way it's a win-win for us.
Ukraine was paying 197 dollars,Russia asked for a 2009 price of 250, eventually willing to go down to 240,plus 1 dollar transit charge per unit.Ukraine refused and demanded only 201 plus 2 dollar transit
fee. What is Russia to do ??? The market price is over 400 dollars !
Ukraine ,pay a fair price (it is still a bloody good discount ) and stop stealing the EU transit gas.
A lesson to Hungary--How about a huge boost in Gov.investment to promote alternatives,Geo-thermal,solar,etc.. thus creating new business, new jobs, new revenue AND weaning Hungary away from outside energy sources .
Fuck Nabucco, think local, think of Hungary first.
Alternative energy is expensive. I hope it's part of our long term, post-Gyurcsany plans, but we need something right now. Nabucco will do for the next 20 or so years, until we develop something independent and sustainable.
The one thing we really cannot afford is to be dependent on Russians alone. Don't put all your eggs in one basket as they say. The very first thing I would do is increas our strategic storage capacity, just in case.
Ricsi,
"What is Russia to do???"
Sto gyelaty???
Your idol, Comrade Putin, could only come up with one solution: turn off the gas, even if it means freezing all his other customers. This seems OK with you. Maybe Russia could invade Ukraine too and solve the problem once and for all...
This is where mindless dogma leads: your exceedingly fat ass gets frozen. Your party (Jobbik) needs to rethink its idiotic ideology. Your green-pinko-nazi mix of energy solution is total non-sense. No surprise there. Your teachers were right...
Guliver
"your teachers were right " LOL,it seems as though you still need to continue your own education .
Business is business,a fair price is a fair price,if Ukraine steals EU gas what would you suggest, genius.
My solution -If the EU and US love the 'Orange revolution' so much, now is the time to support it-pay the difference between Russia's 250 and Ukraine's willingness to pay 201 or whatever and end this farce.
Then diversify our supply sources so as not "to have all our egg's in one basket" to quote Stan.
Ricsi,
LOL? You shouldn't be.
You see, it's eggs not egg's. Your teachers WERE right... You should learn the basic grammar of your own mother tongue, which we both know is Cockney, before you offer half-baked "advice" on the intcricacies of monopoly pricing, energy independence and the like.
Jobbik must be scraping the bottom of the barrel to hire you as a troll. I guess being a racist sheisskopf is good enough for them.
Their (and your) freaky suck-up to Putin's Russia is dishonest and just plain stupid.
If you really want to help the country you should reduce your calorie intake to improve the energy situation.
Guliver
Once again you resort to pathetic attacks against spelling or grammar rather than constructive debate-a sure sign of an attention seeking loser.
By the way -what does "intcricacies" mean ? LOL
use spell checker MORON before trying to be all superior .
Caught me there...

Hot Paprika
Hi !!
Our resident comedian will be frantically searching the net for a photo of you !! LOL
Did you see the one he thinks is me,over weight, ill fitting suit and tie, well what can I say ?? Almost an exact opposite--though he got the glasses right !
Hi Ricsi
Yes mate :-) He wouldn't make a good Columbo!
Hi Gullible Gulliver! Here is some info about me..
Hungarian Paprika has seven (or more) classes (special quality delicate, exquisite delicate, pungent exquisite delicate, rose, noble sweet, half-sweet, and hot). By the way, the brightest red peppers aren't the hottest. In fact, the lighter red and lighter brown are hotter than the bright varieties. For mildest flavor, choose the Spanish variety; for a bit more more pizzazz, go Hungarian. :-))
Ricsi in Pécs looks like this - http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/21036.jpg
past your bedtime kids!
That's it,that's me !!! LOL ,tell me I look good eh !! Do the colours suit me ???
God ! I am so honoured you gays are so interested in me, but hate to disappoint you,I am only interested in ladies. Sorry kids.
Hotpaprika,
No worries. You are on the Aussie shit-list. Different department, same process.
Gulliver
Illusions of power,LOL,you can take medication for that nowadays.
What list will we find you on ? The 'shit stirrers list'?
Game over kids,I have to sleep.
Illusion of power: Magyar Garda uniform.
Illusion of power: The Western Civilization.
Illusion of power-US supremacy and zionism.
Risci! The US is All Knowing and All Powerful! Just don't look behind the curtain!
Those who think they are all knowing and all powerful have the furthest to fall.
Szekes,
Never mind the curtain, we don't need it if everyone is blind or just don't want to see the obvious.
"We, the Jewish people, control America, and the
Americans know it." (Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, October 3, 2001.)
Stan/Risci, the next four years will be very interesting for the USA, especially the Democrats. They got what they wanted and control all branches of government. They also have some serious problems to deal with. I am very curious and will give the them the benefit of a doubt for now. However, Obama's reaction to the Middle East conflicts and the EU's energy issues will be enlightening. What does this mean for Hungary? Probably less notice, which could be a good thing. I don't want to find a Paprikas Csirke fast food restaurant in every small falu!
Szekes,
His name is spelled Ricsi, not Risci. And he is not gay.
Repeat: RICSI IS NOT GAY. He said it himself, numerous times. He is not gay. He likes ladies.
Hey Gullie! Why are you so fixated on Ricsi's sexual orientation? We all know he's not sandy, but you on the other hand are an unknown. Could it be that the Lilliputian end of your other brain is working overtime in Gaydar mode to try and sniff out "like minded Fellows"?
Ricsi, my humble apologies for any distress I may have caused in accidentally misspelling your name. Fat fingers cause more text errors than any other form of brain damage!
Anyway, getting back on track, as a conservative I am very interested in what happens in the US but feel we are in for a liberal explosion of legislation. For Hungary, I can see the attraction of Jobbik for those who feel the government has let them down by not focusing on Hungary and its cultural heritage. Liberalism has been the downfall of every great culture in history. When you take away moral and cultural stability, you take away the backbone of a civilization. When anything goes...the culture goes away. As Mr. Farkas has made very plain in several of his comments here. History is very important and must be taken into account in any society as a tool to build future success on. Ignoring it, as so many seem to want to specifically with Trianon, just creates more tension and dooms you to failure.
PS...Mr Gulliver...don't take the commentary too seriously!
Szekes
Thanks for your comment,as for spelling my name wrong, who cares ? This is an internet forum and it amazes me how idiots like GayGullible play on the 'bad grammar' card- this is typing on a keyboard not writing a thesis.
Jealousy brings out the worst in people, maybe Gulli deep down wishes he could find a real women instead of fantasising over me !
Now can we please return to normal service and switch out the pathetic ones.
Ricsi, I have to admit, the rantings of Gulliver, Innocent Bystander and others makes this forum interesting, even if they don't add very much substance. All the intellectual heavy lifting though is handled through others!
Szekes
Got to agree,in the middle of a deepening crisis we all need to have some idiots to laugh at to relieve the daily pressure. I am just amazed he found me so ' desirable' and chased me round the net,Gullible is quiet today, probably 'researching' on his porno sites to try to find me !!
Happy hunting
