Freedom House praises Hungary in latest report

Hungary was a stable democracy last year, scoring maximum points in the field of political and civil rights, the independent Washington-based Freedom House institute writes in its annual global human rights report released on Monday.

Hungary was among 89 of the 193 countries classified as fully free. Among neighbouring countries, Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia received the highest marks for last year, just as for 2007.

Freedom House will issue detailed country reports in the spring.

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…

  2. Attila says:

    Freedom in Gyurcsanistan?
Haha, is it some kind of bad joke or what?
“Freedom is slavery” wrote Orwell in 1984… 21th century is 1984…

  3. Innocent_Bystander says:

@Attila: You need to spend some time in edu-stan. It was going to be 1948, then finally 1984 – partially to mark a centenary of 1884. It was published in 1949 based on the outline written in 1944
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineteen_Eighty-Four
“My recent novel [1984] is NOT intended as an attack on Socialism or on the British Labour Party (of which I am a supporter) but as a show-up of the perversions … which have already been partly realized in Communism and *Fascism*. …The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasize that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere.” The Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters of George Orwell Volume 4 – In Front of Your Nose 1945-1950 p.546 (Penguin)
Will you people please learn to read something more than you were forced to in school (and never read away, just the crib notes).
What do you people learn in f***in university???

Actually it was going to be called 1980 originally, then changed to 1982 and finally to 1984 due to the very long time it took to complete. It was finished in 1948,and thus 1984 was a reverse play on those numbers,48-84.It was first published in 1949 by Martin Secker and Warburg ltd.
Orwell’s original name was Eric Arthur Blair, and he was a Jewish socialist born in the then British India. He died in London in January 1950,so soon after completing his master piece.

  5. Innocent_Bystander says:

@Ricsi: So you do know how to read: “Orwell originally meant 1980 as the story’s time, but as the writing became prolonged, he re-titled it 1982, then 1984, coincidentally the reverse of the year written, 1948.” Why not cut and paste the whole article in. Better still try to understand the real message of the book and tell your Jobbik apes when you come to the big city for the jamboree with the Gárda on the 17th. Make sure you sew some name tags into your underpants so if you get lost the police will help you find your Mummy.

  6. Ricsi says:

You are a real obnoxious prat-its okay for you to ‘cut and paste’ from wikipedia, but not for me to quote the original front piece of the book ??? You are beyond belief in your childishness.
As for the message ,we understand it well,we see CCTV and In-Kal appearing on the streets and that is nothing compared to the UK today what with its 4 million cameras, arrogant armed ‘shoot to kill’ police, biometric passports and ID cards,DNA bank, etc… Looks like Orwell was spot on,which is why we are resisting such a police state.
Now please re-read Orwell, look around and begin to grow up.

  7. Gulliver says:

    Ricsi,
Well, you turn out to be another plagiarist, just like your mate Hotpaprika:
    http://www.politics.hu/20090106/government-to-plow-extra-ft-1bn-into-eliminating-roma-slums#c35
Quotes are allowed in quotation marks and with the source identified, exactly as Innocent Bystander has done. Otherwise it is stealing, lying and fraud. There is no use getting upset after you have been caught.
‘Your honor, I didn’t mean to steal the car, I just needed it to drive to the Jobbik demonstration. I was going to return it, I swear…’
In order to get a lighter sentence, you must show remorse, not anger. I think Jobbik needs to be notified of your disgraceful behavior.

  8. Stan says:

Indecent_bysexual and Trolliver are trying to turn this place into a libsi sewage.
    Ignore them.

  9. Gulliver says:

    Stan,
Observing basic rules of conduct (and grammar) is “libsi sewage” to you. Ignoring them is the Jobbik choice. Brave New World, indeed.

  10. Ricsi says:

    Gulliver
    Forever talking crap–go away idiot
(Did I breach your rule of conduct ?)

  11. Uncle Joe says:

@Gulliver, Bystander – In Hungary(& many other countries), plagiarism is not seen in the same light as in Anglo Saxon countries. When it occurs, students are often warned, let off, or ignored. The seriousness of the breach is not ingrained in the mind. This isn’t going to change anytime soon, and is partly the legacy of a mentality which makes Hungarians feel that they have got one up on the ‘state’ if they got away with it.
I know of offers from people in Hungary to do academic projects & even thesis work for a fee. My Hungarian friends (sadly) tell me it is not unusual. There is no point sweating over this point in a blog. As someone pointed out earlier, it is simply a question of culture &/or personal integrity.

  12. Ricsi says:

    Uncle Joe
Thought you would be quick to side with the idiots, where is the plagiarism in copy/pasting from the internet ? Please show me copyright laws that forbid this.Omitting ” quotation” marks is a sin ??
When did I or HotPaprika ever claim that the material was OUR own work ? Obviously my comments
on Orwell came from the books introduction by Prof.Peter Davison (if I remember his name correctly).
This is an internet forum not a University building,if I entered such works for my thesis without quoting sources then I would indeed expect to be rebuked.
Now you show some personal integrity by clearing off.

  13. Tunde says:

What this has to do with Freedom House being a joke (I had personal experience with their checking on “freedom” and “democracy” here), often fronted by Charles Gáti, who worked writing communist propaganda until he thought it was time to leave in 56 I don’t know, but Uncle Joe writing that cheating is in Hungarian culture is really too much. The rise of cheating is a global phenomenon and AngloSaxon countries are far from above it:
    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/more-pupils-than-ever-cheat-at-school-exams-489453.html

  14. hotpaprika says:

    @ Tunde
Agree! UJ has a typical arrogant Western view, thinking they are superior, however Hungarians don’t seem to be brainwashed as the west and still stand up to liars, many western countries accept that Politicians Lie, here in Hungary and central Europe most people will not tolerate the Bullshit.

  15. Anonymous says:

Ricsi – plagiarism applies to any material which is not your own (whether your classmate, book, internet etc). For copyrighted materials you can get additionally sued. btw even if the copyright is expired (usually 50 yrs for a book, you are still guilty of plagiarism, but not violating copyright)
No one said it is a “sin”. As I said, some cultures do not treat it as seriously, when someone fails to acknowledge. Apparently, Gulliver & Bystander are not from that culture which is why they are making it an issue when you failed to clarify that it was taken from somewhere else. In the Anglo-saxon culture (which you and HP share, of at least been brought up in), there is an implicit responsibility of the writer to acknowledge material or state references, which is taken from elsewhere, and not on the reader to prove that you tried to pass it off as your own.

  16. hotpaprika says:

@UJ who is too gutless to comment under a name but has several personalities! One thing I don’t even want to begin to assume what is in your corrupted mind UJ, and its your perception that you assumed it was our writing, I am not making any money out of it so stick your bullshit where the sun don’t shine.

  17. Uncle Joe says:

@Ricsi – That anonymous was me, of course. I am not too bothered about plagiarism on a forum or blog, but I am (to a certain extent) in class work.
Culturally, I am somewhere in between since my own country frowns on plagiarism, but doesn’t treat it the same way as Anglo Saxon countries.

  18. Ricsi says:

    Uncle Joe
Thanks for your civilised, perfectly reasonable comment !
Now if only Gullible and the Innocent one could follow suit,we might yet make progress.

  19. Gulliver says:

    Bully Boys,
Never mind the legality. This whole plagiarism kerfuffle is about intellectual honesty. These guys think it’s perfectly reasonable to use other people’s property as their own. Naturally, the lies don’t stop there. Ricsi, the chief bullyboy, is masquarading as a Hungarian patriot. In fact he is just a ‘useful idiot’ (V.I. Lenin) sent by Jobbik to wreak havoc on these pages. He used to be the resident hate-monger (evening shift) on the English language forum of http://www.jobbik.hu. Now that page is down, for whatever reason, so we have him soiling these sites. They cannot use him anywhere else as he doesn’t really speak the language too well. Certainly not as well as a second grade gypsy child in tirpak land.
His second fiddle, imitation Hotpaprika, is too stupid even for that. He is still useful though, carrying Arafat posters around town and scaring little old ladies during “demonstrations”.
They all suck up to Putin – in exchange for what? Jobbik now has a Russian language version also, no doubt edited by the KGB. The only drawback seems to be that the old Soviet memorial on Szabadsag-ter is now off limits for them.

  20. hotpaprika says:

    @Gulliver
Are you delusional or writing a novel? because if there is a book release where is the signing going to be? Wouldn’t want to miss that occasion.

  21. Anonymous says:

@Hot Poop – the book signing is in the Solomon islands starting Saturday. Do hurry, and book your tickets.
