The current gas crisis may give impetus to the accomplishment of the Nabucco pipeline project, Hungary’s ambassador to the project, Mihaly Bayer told MTI on Friday.
The present crisis brings the importance of a safe energy supply into the limelight, he said, adding that diversification of both the transit route and the purchasing sources become especially important. “Nabucco for us would serve this purpose especially well”, he said.
The ambassador, who spoke to MTI ahead of a Nabucco summit in Budapest on January 27, said the gas crisis will have an impact on this meeting, too.
The aim of the summit will be to strengthen the parties’ commitment towards the project. Apart from the countries participating in the project, possible supplier countries will also be represented, like Iraq, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
Some countries will be represented by their prime ministers, others by their energy ministers, and Azerbaijan by its president, the ambassador said.
The 3,300km-long Nabucco pipeline is envisaged as transporting natural gas to Western Europe – from the Caspian region to Austria, via Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary.
