President resubmits rejected nominee for Supreme Court chief justice

President Laszlo Solyom has for the second time nominated Maria Orban Havasi as president of the Supreme Court, the president’s office told MTI on Tuesday.

Solyom renewed his nomination of Havasi after she was rejected by parliament on December 8 last year.

Solyom had earlier nominated Andras Baka for the post. He was rejected in May.

The high court has been without a chief justice since June 24, when the six-year term of Zoltan Lomnici expired.

The country’s president has the right to appoint the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, but the appointment must be confirmed by a two-thirds majority in parliament.

Havasi has been president of the Gyor Court of Appeals since 2004. If elected, she would be Hungary’s first female Supreme Court Chief Justice.
